The Slow Death of Capitalism

America’s Healthy Future Act as amended (10-02-2009)

The legislation details how private insurer’s are permitted to vary insurance premiums. By law, insurers would not be able to vary premiums based on weight or deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. A morbidly-obese person would have the same health insurance premium as an olympic athlete. Granted, it’s an extreme example, but it highlights the shortsightedness of the bill. Insurance companies will have to raise premiums across the board to cover for the added risk. In effect, they will be subsidizing the costs of the obese by charging the healthy higher premiums. It’s not a far stretch to summarize the legislation with a quote from Marx: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

It has been a good first year for the United Socialist States of America. The government has taken over private institutions such as banks and automotive companies, passed an unprecedented stimulus bill, and now desires to usurp the health care industry. Meanwhile, unemployment has soared to 9.8% when the president himself promised that the stimulus legislation would see it peak at 8.5%.

Congress should be worried. If it does not begin to correct the injustices it imposed, it will lose. Not by revolution, but by votes. Americans are growing increasingly intolerant of power-hungry, career politicians whose only agenda is gaining favor with enough special interest groups to get reelected.

I leave you with a question: Are we better off for the spending the money of our children?
